Second Wind Bodywork specializes in athletic massage. Our therapists are greatly passionate about helping athletes reach their goals to run faster, jump higher, and perform better with each practice.

 

About Athletic massaage

Athletic massage, also commonly called sports massage, is becoming a familiar component in the training routines of Olympic and professional athletes, as well as in private and university sports programs. It enriches conditioning programs, helps athletes prepare for and recover from competition, reduces the potential for injuries, and aids in injury rehabilitation. Ultimately, sports massage enhances performance.

Although many athletic trainers and sports physical therapists may use massage in a limited way as one of many training modalities, they can find themselves too busy to focus on full massage sessions for each athlete. Sports massage specialists use their highly developed, focused skills to apply massage for both general health maintenance and performance enhancement.

 

 

What to Expect
Step By Step


Receiving Athletic Massage Sessions at
Second Wind Bodywork

When you are ready to receive an athletic massage at Second Wind Bodywork we want you to be comfortable with the process and have no unexpected surprises. For this purpose we have outlined step by step what will happen during your session.

 

Before the session:

Make sure you are doing what is right for you. Ask yourself why you need an athletic massage. What sport do you participate in? What parts of your body get overused?. How will athletic massage benefit you? When you make your appointment let us know about your goals and expectations so we can begin to develop a plan for you.

Have an empty stomach. Athletic massage can sometimes involve deep tissue bodywork which can be intense. Having food in the stomach can make it uncomfortable for you to be able to handle the amount of pressure that may need to be applied. Eat 1-2 hours prior to your appointment so you are not hungry during your session either. We want you to be comfortable so your time with us will be plesant and effective.

Communicate with your therapist. Let him or her know why you want athletic massage and show them what areas cause you the most trouble. Your therapist will evaluate your sports specific muscular tension and movement patterms to create a custom session to meet your needs. They will explain the plan to you and make sure you understand and are comfortable with it. Ask any questions you have and voice any concerns.

 

During the session:

Disrobe to your comfort level. Depending on the best plan of action for your needs your therapist might ask you to “disrobe to your comfort level” Don’t start stripping yet! Please wait for your therapist to leave the room before you start removing your clothing. Disrobing involves taking off as much outer clothing and undergarments you are comfortable with while being covered by a full sheet. Many people chose to be completely unclothed while others chose to keep on bottom undergarments.

*Keep in mind: You will be covered by a fresh clean sheet at all times. Only one area of your body will be exposed at a time—the area the therapist is working on. Areas of the body considered to be private will NEVER be exposed for any reason. The practitioner is professionally trained and licensed. Massage often requires slow, smooth gliding which clothing impedes. Many strokes require contact with the skin and can not be done through clothing. If you would rather be fully clothed please let us know as there are options available that your therapist would be happy to work with.

Communicate. Your therapist will ask you on occasion how the pressure is and may ask you to use a number scale. It is important for you to let the therapist know any changes, whether you can handle more pressure or if you are in pain. Because each body is different there is no exact science to how much pressure to apply in any particular area for a particular condition. The practitioner is a licensed massage therapist, not a psychic—please keep your therapist informed on how you feel so they can do what is right for you. 

 

After the Session:

Drink plently of water. Massage of any form, but especially athletic massage and deep tissue bodywork release lactic acid waste products that have built up in the muscle tissue. It is important to drink enough water to help remove these substances from the body or they will settle back into the muscle.

Notice how you feel. Take a moment to notice if you feel any physical differences right after your session and also for a day or two following you massage. Some changes can be immediate and others take a day or two to settle in. You might not notice any change at all and that's just fine.

Communicate. Keep track of any changes and let your therapist know about them. This will ensure that things are going well or will help us see if your next sesion should be approached differently. Again each body is different so what works for one doesn't always work for all. Some trial and error might be encountered through the process of your athletic massage program.
